The Mosquito Factor: Heartworms are transmitted exclusively by mosquitoes
Prevention is Essential: The American Heartworm Society urges pet owners to use heartworm preventatives year-round, as missing just one dose can leave a pet vulnerable.
Disease Impact: Heartworms settle in the heart, lungs, and blood vessels, causing severe lung disease, heart failure, and damage to other organs.
Symptoms: Look for signs such as a persistent cough, fatigue, reluctance to exercise, decreased appetite, and weight loss.
Testing: Annual testing is recommended, as it can take up to six months for a pet to test positive after being bitten by an infected mosquito.
